Woven Strata

Milan Design Week 2026
in Paola Lenti Milano

2026.4.20(Mon) - 26(Sun)

Kawashima Selkon Textiles will exhibit at Milan Design Week 2026, the world's largest design event, held in Milan, Italy, from April 20 (Mon) to April 26 (Sun), 2026.

The theme of our fifth participation is "Woven Strata."

The unevenness and grain seen in strata formed, compressed, and uplifted over long periods of time; the mineral sparkle that changes with the angle of light; the roughness of dry earthen walls-.

We have carefully expressed the diverse textures-traces of time created by natural sedimentation-through the textile techniques we have cultivated over many years.

Woven Strata

1843, Kyoto.
From the moment the first thread was woven, Kawashima Selkon's "strata" began to form.
Technique, materials, color, and people's intentions.
Layer upon layer, these strata move between tradition and innovation,
leading to today's expressions.

2026, Milan.
The thread that began in Kyoto
overlaps inherited traditional techniques with new sensibilities,
and weaves the 184th layer.

Just as soil accumulates to become strong rock, and threads overlap to become cloth that reflects light,
we, too, have built up techniques and intentions.
That accumulation shapes the present and connects to the next layer of generations.

MATERIAL

100 Black Textiles

Techniques × Weave Structures

Textiles are composed of three elements-materials × techniques (weaving methods) × weave structures (patterns). The essence of textile making lies in how diverse fabrics are created through their combinations and balance. Focusing on "color," one of the key elements of textile beauty, we intentionally limited it to "black only" and emphasized techniques and weave structures to create 100 black textiles.

Japan's Black

In Japan there are many words for black, such as sumi-black, jet black, raven black, nibi, and roiro. In formal kimono, the deeper the black, the more beautiful it is considered. In this way, black is special in Japanese culture, and Japanese people have long sought beautiful black.
By combining this feeling toward black with a belief in the limitless possibilities of black and of our textiles, we repeated nearly a thousand trials and completed 100 black textiles.

MESSAGE

“Sedimentation” refers to the natural phenomenon in which sand, soil, and organic matter accumulate where the transporting force of water or wind weakens, forming strata and sedimentary rock over astonishingly long periods of time.
These strata and sedimentary rocks are eventually exposed before our eyes by powerful forces such as tectonic movement, erosion by water, and excavation.
Once exposed, they slowly weather again through erosion by rain and wind over time.
When we look at a cross-section of strata or sedimentary rock, it is often a moment within this very process.
This exhibition, featuring textiles created around the theme of “sedimentation,” evokes the landscape of exposed layers slowly eroding and weathering over time.
Within this scene, we hope you will feel the diversity of techniques and methods, and the precision of the weaving in the works, and keep them in your memory.
